A Wilderness Journey—2011
On June 15, 2011, Zach Collier, Andy Maser, J. R. Weir and Billy Miller's packed boats and gear 8 miles arduous miles into the rugged Kalmiopsis Wilderness to run the Wild and Scenic Chetco River. Their put-in was Slide Creek on the east side of the Wilderness. Their take-out was the Steel Bridge on the coast side. Their photos and video of this 23 mile stretch of the seldom-seen Wild Chetco River are priceless. Read their trip report at Chetco River Exploratory. Four videos are posted below. The Chetco River Protection Action would provide greater protection for this 2 miles of the river by upgrading the current Scenic classification to Wild. The change is based on the Forest Service's 1993 recommendation to Congress. The Boulder Creek to Mislatnah section while not within the Kalmiopsis Wilderness is equally wild.
